A Thousand Gin Soaked Nights

I came out of the darkness of a thousand gin soaked nights
My French wine wisdom running wild, I scaled dizzy heights
Looking for the answers to the meaning of my life
In the pleasures that the bottles bring before they turn to strife

My days and nights were spent in wild abandonment
In love with my addiction not wanting to repent
Rejecting all my loved ones and advice that was well meant
Sinking further further down in my predicament

I did it to myself
I thought it was a game
I thought I was winning
I felt no shame
How I loved those bottles
Standing there on the shelf
I did it to me
I couldn't love myself

I came out of the darkness of many a hungover morn
With a soul bruised and battered as I raged against the storm
I needed to be born again before I could take flight
On a love that would sustain me in spite of my life’s plight

I did it to myself
I thought it was a game
I thought I was winning
I felt no shame
How I loved those bottles
Standing there on the shelf
I did it to me
I couldn't love myself

It was me or the bottles
One of us had to go
It was going to be me
Unless I said no
No to the pleasures
That dull all the pain
I had to stop my precious life
From going down the drain

Now I know there must be darkness
So that I can see the light
And I know there must be suffering
It's all just part of life
But I never found  the answers
In the bottles on the shelf
I've had  find the source of love
And learn to love myself

I did it for myself
I ended the game
I knew I was losing
I accepted the blame
Though I loved those bottles
Standing there on the shelf
I did it for me
Now I love myself

Repeat

This Song is based on a poem written by Rathfarnham poet Tony Shields
Picture
I did it for me
I came out of the
Darkness
Of a thousand gin soaked nights
French wine wisdom
Running wild through
Days and nights of
Carefree Abandonment
Rejecting love one’s advice
Friendships lost
Coming into the light
Out of the darkness
Learning to say no
Opening my soul
To life’s intelligence
Loving myself
I did it for me
